HRMC to Host Giant Colon, Dermascan and PSA Screenings at Relay

Huron Regional Medical Center is spreading the word about cancer prevention and early detection at the Beadle County Relay for Life event on Friday, June 12, at the South Dakota State Fairgrounds.

This is the tenth year HRMC has hosted a booth to provide education about the various types of cancer and the critical importance of early detection,” says Kim Rieger, vice president of marketing and communications at HRMC. “This is a perfect way to deliver cancer detection and prevention information to people who are there in support of a cure for the disease.”

Kim Rieger, vice president of marketing and communications at HRMC, talks about Huron Regional Medical Center’s booth at Beadle County Relay for Life:

Back this year, is a giant colon display – an interactive educational tool with the message that colorectal cancer is preventable, treatable and beatable! As visitors stroll through the inflatable likeness of the colon, they’ll find polyps, precancerous lesions and other things to beware of along with educational descriptive signs. Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death.

Prostate specific antigen (PSA) testing for prostate cancer will also be available. Men over the age of 50 who haven’t had a screening in the last year are encouraged to participate in the simple blood test to determine their risk for prostate cancer. One in six men will get prostate cancer during his lifetime – it is the second most common cancer found in American men.PSA testing is funded through the HRMC Foundation with monies raised at the annual Bob Myers Memorial Golf Tournament.

Sheila Renner, MT, of Huron Regional Medical Center’s laboratory stands ready to provide prostate cancer screenings at the 2014 Relay for Life. Men over the age of 50 who have not had a PSA screening in the last year are invited to stop by HRMC’s booth this Friday, June 12 from 5:00-7:30 p.m. at the SD State Fairgrounds.
